We’ve all had them-those nights when you just can’t shut off the day, and your mind and body feel like a hamster stuck on the never ending wheel of life.
Eating and drinking the right foods and beverages before bedtime can be just what you need to help lull you into dreamland, and melt away stress.
Here are a few ideas from our staff, and experts on sleep and nutrition.
Warm Almond Milk
According to Yoga Journal, half an hour before bed, try drink a glass of warm organic milk spiced with a half teaspoon of dried ground ginger and four or five crushed cardamom pods. Ancient Ayurveda (an Indian form of alternative medicine) teaches that cardamom or nutmeg can help calm excess Vata (or energy), and assists in nourishing the nervous system, as well as settling the digestion.
We’ve personally tried this remedy, and found it very soothing to drink as a hot nighttime beverage, and tasty, too!
Chamomile has been used for centuries to help with sleep and stress. As tea, it can calm an upset stomach or to help with sleep. Two types of chamomile are used for good health: German chamomile (Matricaria retutica) and Roman (or English) chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile). Art of Tea also has a lovely tea called Banana Dulce that’s sure to please. It’s an herbal blend with notes of ripe banana & sweet coconut, a delicate aroma of fresh graham crackers, and an overall flavor that reminds us of warm banana bread. Just the thing to send you off to sleep on a sweet note.
Citrus and Ginger for Digestion
Marilyn Torres of Forkful.net likes to drink kiwi lime tea with ginger before bed. Ginger is a natural digestive aid, and can help soothe nerves and warm the body. “Naturally sweet teas like the kiwi-lime or an orange blossom tea makes me feel like I’m already having dessert, which makes me less likely to pillage the pantry for empty calories,” says Marilyn.
Art of Tea has a French Lemon Ginger blend we love. Ingredients include: organic lemongrass, organic fair trade South African rooibos, organic ginger, organic lemon verbena. These natural tummy soothers are sure to help with digestion, and a calm stomach leads to better rest.
