The food truck scene is Seattle is exploding, and we’re finally getting waffles. And if you’ve been craving your waffles hot, fresh, and full to bursting with flavor, you need to get to My Sweet Lil Cakes.
I got invited to visit Jesse Lee and Sheena at their Capitol Hill stop and ended up conducting the review inside their food truck, and it was a blast. Sheena was focusing on getting the waffles to perfection, so Jesse Lee and I talked about the food.
For a little truck with a tiny menu, they cater to a huge range of food needs. There are vegan/gluten free options and, since they build each waffle to order with a base batter, they can pull out things you’re allergic to – or substitute a gluten-free batter. Just tell them what you need. And at two sticks for $8-10, or one for $5-$6, it’s going to seem like you’re not getting that much food when you read the menu, but it’s a deceptively large portion. I may not be the largest eater, but I was full with two waffles, and I think three would be a big meal for most people. The moral: order two waffles each, and split dessert with a friend.
For the vegetarians you have the Cornbread, Cheddar, Jalapeno & Cilantro waffle, which hits you in the nose first with cornbread and hints of spicy deliciousness from the soy chorizo. The best part of this waffle, though, are its fantastically crispy edges, which I would crave any night of the week.
Also, you’ll definitely want to leave room for dessert. The Red Velvet Buttermilk & Dark Cherry waffle, served with a dollop of sweet cream cheese, has a fluffy buttermilk batter barely holding in molten cherry cores. It’s what you wish red velvet was like normally. And the blueberry lemon ricotta waffle, even with its equally magma blueberry bombs, is far more delicate, with a light citrus waffle that really gets better with each bite. I could see getting the blueberry as a summer snack then hitting the red velvet later in the summer and into fall.
My Sweet Lil Cakes is, in a word, is adorable. I mean really, really adorable, from the retro signage to the super delicious waffles to Jesse Lee and Sheena themselves. While I’ve decided that almost everyone who runs a food truck is already in that kind of person-friendly mindset, these two have an infectious excitement over improving their waffles, from the two years in prep with a corndog machine from Amazon, to future plans that I can’t wait to announce here. The only word for it is cute, and the fluffy waffles match them toe for toe.
They’re just getting back to a regular schedule after blasting their way through events, so keep track of them on Facebook. And bring your friends; they’ll be sad otherwise.
