Right now is an amazing time to get ice cream in the states. To the wonderful flavors of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams to food trucks, people are experimenting more and more with what used to be limited to chocolate and vanilla. Even better, places like Magnolia Ice Cream are here to bring us a bite of the tropics. The California team sent us all six flavors to try out, from lychee to avocado.
The flavors are great, and all the fruit flavors have chunks of real fruit in them, blending local milk with the South Pacific. Our team loved the lychee, which was mellow and fruity, and the ube, or purple yam, which was savory sweet like good black sesame ice cream can be. Another big favorite was coconut, which had chunks of young coconut mixed in to balance out the initial sweetness. The Thai Tea and mango were also delicious, and we loved that both were very clear flavors, as mango and tea in ice cream tend to just be very sweet. Even the avocado was amazing – it takes getting used to if you’re not sold on avocado ice cream, but the custard taste is wonderful.
Even with all of that, we really recommend putting several flavors into a bowl at once, which was where all things really shined. If you’re not ready for yams or avocados in your ice cream, mango and lychee together were great, as was coconut and thai tea. If you can get all six, you could have an amazing sundae party of mixing and matching flavors.
They’re extending their line soon to have more tropical favorites in the states, but for now you can check out their website for information on how and where to pick up a pint for yourself.
