Sexy (and tasty): Voli Vodka
Vodka’s been my good-time gal recently, and why not? It blends pretty seamlessly with most mixers, has some interesting craft distilleries getting creative/organic/jiggy with it and because it’s relatively low carb/low cal, it tends to be the indulgence of choice for fitness-oriented weekend warriors like myself (along with tequila and red wine).
So when the uber cool start-up CraveLocal ever-so graciously asked me to scope out Voli Vodka at Gulf Liquors on Miami Beach recently, my alcohol-attuned liver gave a little fist pump and said ‘hell yeah!’
Here’s the ‘skinny’:
- About 60-75 calories and less than 1 carb per ounce. That’s a 20-40% less than most major brands.
- Distilled from French Wheat and spring water.
- Comes in 5 flavors: Lyte, Espresso Vanilla, Raspberry Cocoa, Lemon, Orange Vanilla
My lucky lil’ palate was fortunate enough to get to sample each of the flavors on their own and test their yummy factor when blended with some mixers. The clear cut winner was the Espresso Vanilla. A strong hit of java and the perfect amount of vanilla smoothly coat the tongue and settles in easily – no burn, no overwhelming taste of the grain or alcohol. Absolutely ideal for sipping sans mixer and subbing a decadent post-dinner dessert for. And if you’re an unabashed boozer like me, starting off the day with a cuppa joe and a hit of the Voli Espresso Vanilla is enough take the edge off of the poo you have to clean because your English Bulldog thought it’d be a stellar idea to eat the stuffing out of their bed the night before.
Maybe that’s just me.
The Raspberry Cocoa and cranberry juice are a dangerously deelish combo – think: cherry-flavored Tootsie Roll Pop. A primarily berry flavor with just a hint of chocolate in the back of the mouth. Excuse me Voli, but uhh…how many licks DOES it take? Mhmmm! Easily the best mix for a party or sweating it out at a club – light, sweet and refreshing.
Orange Vanilla and ginger ale tickles the itch for something a bit bubbly and exotic. The citrus cuts right through the drink and the vanilla lightly plays off the fizz of the ‘ale. This spirit would make a great creamsicle flavored cocktail recipe. One of my personal favorite combinations of the night!
After all of this cocoa/vanilla/coffee broohaha, the Lemon flavor didn’t get my engine revvin’. It stood its ground when mixed with Sprite, Ginger Ale and the Cranberry juice, but seemed to be missing that all-important secondary flavor that elevated the other blends.
Voli would like to remind you to “stay sexy,” and after 4 or 5 of ounces of the espresso vanilla flavor, not only was I SEXY, but the cardboard likeness of Pitbull at Gulf was rockin’ my world something fierce. So Pit, you’ll have to “Excuse me, excuse me, cause I might drink a little more than I should, tonight” – and yeah, that’s Voli Mr. 305 is pouring, serving and guzzling throughout the video. Good catch, Sherlock.
And by the way…have you been to Gulf Liquors (1681 Alton Road, Miami Beach) yet?
Not only do they carry Voli, but I’d be hard pressed to find a spirit that they DON’T carry. And with over 1600 boutique wines on premises, this Beach icon is the perfect spot to pick up some amazing bottles to build up your personal stash (or share…it that’s what you’re into). And if you’re a good little boy or girl, owner Jorge Zubigaray will hook it up with a seat at the built in bar and let you sample some quality sips – GRATIS.
Rumor has it that Sean Combs (Puff Daddy, P. Diddy, Diddy, Swag, etc.), Fat Joe, Pitbull and a cadre of other celebrities count on Gulf and Jorge to hook ‘em up when taking in our city’s sights. Next time you’re on the beach, channel your inner shade-studded celeb, swing by Gulf and pick up a bottle of Voli.
And hey…stay sexy.
