We in the Crave Local team love having fresh herbs – they make dishes brighter, and can take even a basic mojito to a higher level of awesome. Some of us prefer to grow our herbs, as it’s cheaper if you can manage to maintain the plants, but it’s hard to do that in an apartment. Well, Back To The Roots, who made those awesome mushroom kits, have a Kickstarter going that will make your home cooking shine with less work.
They’ve designed a Home Aquaponics Kit a fish tank plant pot hybrid that helps you grow herbs – all you have to do is add water and your choice of ridiculously adorable fish. It’s completely self sustaining: the waste-water from the fish is pumped up & upcycled as an awesome organic fertilizer for the plants, and as the plants take up the nutrients they clean the water which then falls back down for the fish. (Anyone who had trouble caring for their childhood pet goldfish is going to love this.)
And they’ve got quite the variety of produce that comes with the kit, including spinach, baby greens, oregano, beans, basil, mint, parsley & thyme. Since it’s smaller than most toaster ovens, you can place it on the counter and clip the herbs as they grow. However, you could check out one of these different stands sorted by dimensions if you need to save on counter space or if you’re planning on getting multiple tanks. Of course, in order for this tank to become a reality, it needs funding from people like you for them to meet their goals.
Check out the video below for more information, and check out the Home Aquaponics Kit Kickstarter page to buy one for yourself – they’re finishing the campaign in ten days, and after that the kits will be $25 more.
Thanks, Back To The Roots! We loved our pet goldfish.
