I love Giada Laurentiis because she tends to make incredible decadent dishes lighter, with out compromising the flavor palette. Her blueberry and mascarpone turnovers and simple, easy to make and a lovely spring time dessert.
Since everything I make for Go Sweet and Skinny is a healthier or lower in fat version of itself, starting with a fruit filling makes my job a lot easier, plus I am total fruit lover. So naturally, this recipe resonated with me, and this past Valentine’s Day I decided to do my own version of it, a little more festive and low fat!
These strawberry and cream cheese heart shaped turnovers turned out deliciously decadent without all the fat, and yet light and fruity enough to be a great spring time dessert! I hope you give them a whirl!
Strawberry Cream Cheese Turnovers
- 1 box of pillsbury pie crusts
- 1 tub of fat free (or 1/3 less fat) cream cheese
- 1 bushel of fresh strawberries
- 2 tbsp of agave nectar
- Cinnamon and sugar for sprinkling
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and spray your cookie sheet lightly with PAM (or whatever cooking spray you like).
Chop up your strawberries and place them in a bowl with 2 tbsp of agave nectar. Mix them around so that they all get covered. Let them sit and sweeten as we move on to the pie crust!
Roll out your pie crusts and using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out little pie crust hearts. Gently spread a very thin layer of fat free cream cheese on of the center each heart, leaving about a 1/4 of an inch free on the edges.
Now gently spoon your strawberries into the center of the pie heart, place another heart on top and use your fork to go around the edges and seal your heart together.
Place on your baking sheet and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar! Repeat till you’ve filled up your baking sheet and then leave them in the oven till the edges start turning golden brown and they puff up!
You’ll know when these adorable turnovers are ready. Feel free to leave them as is, or if you’re hosting a dinner party, serve them on a plate with a small scoop of (low fat) vanilla ice cream or frozen yogurt, and some of the left over sweet strawberries drizzled on top!
