“Texas Monthly is a good match for TEXSOM, with a strong ethical core, high journalistic standards, and a sterling reputation,” said Tidwell. “The magazine is a leader in Texas. Food Editor Patricia Sharpe continues to be an influence on the Texas food and restaurant industry, having won a James Beard Foundation Award for her writing. Wine Columnist Jessica Dupuy has been at the forefront of the conversation about the growth of the Texas wine industry. We are happy to collaborate with such a creative and dynamic organization, whose values of engagement and community-building align with those of TEXSOM.”
Founded in 1985 by Rebecca Murphy, a widely respected wine writer in Dallas, the TEXSOM International Wine Awards (formerly The Dallas Morning News and TEXSOM International Wine Competition) was purchased in 2014 by Tidwell and Hendricks. Murphy founded and grew the competition to be one of the largest, most respected, and longest-running competitions in the United States. Tidwell and Hendricks plan to foster the growth and importance of the competition by creating additional avenues to market and exposure for wineries through the extensive sommelier and wine industry network of TEXSOM, while continuing the consumer outreach of the competition and its promotional partners.
“The TEXSOM Conference has grown from a local event to an international one with Texas roots,” continued Tidwell. “Similarly, we see the same from the promotional publication sponsorship at the TEXSOM International Wine Awards, as we transition from a local newspaper to Texas Monthly, a magazine with Texas roots and an international audience.”
In addition to Texas Monthly, the TEXSOM International Wine Awards will have the following promotional partners. Each of the following businesses will feature the award winning wines and help promote the competition’s reach and influence.

ABOUT TEXSOM
Founded in 2005, TEXSOM was started by Master Sommeliers James Tidwell and Drew Hendricks to help promote professional wine service standards, outline paths for further wine education and certification, and raise public awareness about the professional standards and certifications for sommeliers. Today, the conference draws a total of 900 attendees, of whom 700 are sommeliers and other beverage industry professionals. The TEXSOM group purchased The Dallas Morning News and TEXSOM International Wine Competition in April 2014 and now operates the competition as the TEXSOM International Wine Awards.
