Born in China, but currently calling Lexington, Kentucky home, Dan Wu is a self-proclaimed “culinary evangelist.” His mission? Simply to turn people onto the endlessly fascinating world of food!
Dan, what was your primary inspiration or motivation for competing for a spot on Master Chef?
I’ve always loved cooking and have been becoming more serious about it in the last few years and this was an opportunity to really prove to myself I had the chops. It’s also the perfect time in my life for reinvention.
If you find yourself in a pinch, what’s your go-to recipe?
For a guest it’ll usually be a simple pasta, maybe gnocchi with cherry tomatoes, spinach & Parmesan and a quick salad of frisee & lardons. Solo, I always fall back to Asian comfort foods like ramen & kimchi.
Tell us, what three ingredients do you absolutely have to have in your kitchen?
I’ll give you 3 essential trios:
1. Bacon, butter & Parmesan
2. Sriracha, fish sauce & scallions
3. Red onions, olive oil & kosher salt
What’s one thing we would be surprised to find in your kitchen?
For someone who doesn’t really drink, I always seem to have a bottle of bourbon around. It’s great in stews & pot roasts.
What do you feel your biggest strengths will be during the competition? What will give you the edge to win?
I am the very definition of grace under pressure. It takes a lot to make me crack.
