The Fremont Fair, a homegrown Seattle affair in its 41st year, follows the theme “Keep Fremont Weird” with the amazing Fremont Fair Solstice Parade. While the fair itself supports nonprofits like Fremont Chamber of Commerce and Solid Ground, it’s just as much of an excuse to dress up as a pirate and play in Gas Works Park.
All the parade floats and costumes are homemade, ranging from the Flying Spaghetti Monster to forests to people covered in plastic bags. While it’s a kid friendly fair, with the fair itself a wide range of booths from beer to clothing, new parade visitors from outside Seattle should be advised that nudity is part of the festivities. Groups gather, don body paint, and ride bikes through the parade.
Still, it’s one of the few parades I know of where you can join in and get run over by a giant inflated beach ball.
