This week we’re sharing three of our favorite wines from négociant Cameron Hughes. Hughes creates approachably-priced wines by buying the excess juice from other well-known labels, and rebottling it under his own brand. The savings are significant, and the wine quality is top notch. We highly recommend them. All wine reviews are our own opinions based upon samples provided by the brand, and not for sale.
Cameron Hughes Lot 671, 2016 Meritage, Napa Valley
Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon (39%), Cabernet Franc (32%), Petit Verdot (26%), Merlot (2%), Malbec (1%)
Color: Dark ruby red, with hints of violet on the rim.
Notes: An outstanding value for a Napa Valley red blend. Smooth and supple, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc varietals dominate, but with a silky smooth mouthfeel and finish, thanks to a touch of Merlot. Dark red fruits, blackberry, leather, chocolate, and spice are on the nose and palate. An almost sweet, lingering finish on this wine, with medium tannins and vanilla from French oak aging.
- Pairing: This wine pairs perfectly with beef roasts, as well as roasted root vegetables.
- Recommendation: 90 points, drink now through 2022.
- Suggested retail price: $24
Next on the list is Cameron Hughes Lot 631, a 2017 Pinot Gris from Willamette Valley in Oregon.
Varietals: 100% Pinot Gris
Color: Pale lemon yellow with a greenish rim.
Notes: A pleasant crisp, yet juicy white wine. On the palate, taste flavors of yellow apple, hints of melon, and high minerality that’s typical of Oregon white wines. It ends with a clean finish, and a bit of baking spice. A classy white wine that will drink much more elegantly than it’s under $15 price tag.
- Pairing: This wine pairs perfectly with seafood, light salads, and as an aperitif
- Recommendation: 89 points, drink now through 2022
- Suggested Price: $12
Our third wine was Cameron Hughes Lot 639, a 2017 Monterey County Valdiguié rosé.
Varietals: 100% Valdiguié
Color: Bright pink orange in color.
Notes: On the palate, this wine is incredibly easy-to-drink. Juicy, ripe strawberries are complemented by bright red cherries, stone fruits, and high minerality, along with a hint of sweetness. It finishes long with clean, crisp acidity.
- Pairing: This wine pairs well with cedar plank grilled salmon, light vegetable dishes, and fresh fruit and cheese plates
- Recommendation: 89 points, drink now through 2022
- Suggested Price: $13
