Looking for something refreshing to drink this National Margarita Day (2/22) that won’t wreck your diet?
Made with paleo-friendly ingredients, and all natural flavors, it may surprise you to know that the margarita may actually be geared to fit the bill. Should you drink alcohol with the Paleo? Technically, no, but if you’re looking for a grain-free, gluten-free, processed sugar-free cocktail for the occasional indulgence, then 100% agave tequila is an ideal choice.
Like most of us, your own ‘margarita experience’ likely began with pre-made margarita mix. Just add tequila…and ignore the corn syrup, sugar, and calories. That might have worked in your twenties, but years of calorie-laden frozen margaritas will quickly pack on the pounds, if you aren’t careful.
When looking for a Paleo-friendly tequila, be sure that the bottle clearly states ‘100% agave’, which means no sugar, water, or additional fillers have been added. If the tequila doesn’t say ‘100% agave’, put it down, or plan to do a lot more CrossFit to make up for the indulgence.
Although traditional Margaritas are made with a blanco tequila, an añejo can add layers of flavor-from grassy to caramel, and a subtle sweetness, that will elevate your drink above anything else you’ve tried in the past. Try these recipes, made with circulation increasing hot peppers to satisfy your taste buds!

Combine first four ingredients into a cocktail shaker and add ice, shake vigorously for 30 seconds. Pour through a cocktail strainer into a margarita glass with fresh ice (I like cracked, or semi-crushed). Top with soda, stir once. Garnish with a lime wheel, and a chili pepper.
